Built in 1906 by Oscar Hammerstein, the Manhattan Center features the enormous 12,000-square feet Hammerstein Ballroom. When this venue space first opened, it was to house the Manhattan Opera Company to rival the Metropolitan Opera. Shortly thereafter, in 1910, the Manhattan Opera Company was forced to shut down. The venue then became a vaudeville playhouse. Hammerstein Ballroom tickets sold in droves for these acts.
In the 1970s, the center was sold to Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church and became known as the Manhattan Center. Later, the theatre was renamed the Hammerstein Ballroom after a renovation project in 1997. The third balcony was stripped of all its seats.
