This location dates back to 1865 and was originally a showroom for actual mausoleums and gravestones until the 1960s. The building remained largely vacant until the early 2000s when Diplo, a music producer, made the place into the nurse center for his record label Mad Decent. After hosting a variety of major stars like Shakira, M.I.A., Glass Candy, and Boys Noize, the building was sold in 2010 to Gavin Hecker who established PhilaMOCA. In 2012, Hecker moved into New York City and Eric Bresler took over.
The Mausoleum of Contemporary Art hosts a variety of events with a focus on alternative, underground culture. They feature live performances, films, concerts, and art exhibits, as well as other events like fashion shows, wrestling, and comedy shows.
