The stadium opened in 1976 as the home for both the UNI Panthers’ football as well as men’s and women’s basketball teams along with the volleyball teams and wrestling team. It has hosted events such as the 1990 Mid-Continent Conference men’s basketball tournament and the 1997 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The Uni-Dome has been the location of the Iowa State High School Football Championship games for all classes, along with the semifinal games, since the stadium opened in 1976.

Another video board was installed at the south end of the dome in 2014 to replace the older one and is the second largest of any FCS football school. AstroTurf was installed in the field in 2017.
