Formed in San Francisco in 1975, Alive! is an all-female jazz quintet that held a formative role in women’s music and jazz in particular. With the help of manager Helen Keane, the original line-up of the band was comprised of drummer/percussionist Barbara Borden, percussionist Caroly Brandy, bassist/cellist Susanne DiVincenzo, pianist Janet Small, and vocalist/percussionist Rhiannon. They released their self-titled debut album in 1979.
Their sophomore album, Call It Jazz, was issued in 1981. Their third and final studio album was 1982’s City Life. The group split up in 1986 but would occasionally reunite for special occasions over the next three decades. In 1998, they released a compilation entitled Always Alive! 1976-1986. Original pianist Janet Small died in 2010. In 2015, the surviving members reunited on a semi-permanent basis with Tammy Hall filling in for Janet Small on piano. Get your Alive tickets today!
