A Memphis native, Nichols founded Lucero in 1998. The current members include Rick Steff, Roy Berry, John C. Stubblefield and Brian Venable. Lucero rose to fame in the early 2000s following the release of their self-titled debut album. The album contained a number of hits such as “Raising Hell,” “All Sewn Up” and “Drink ‘Til We’re Gone.”
In the years that followed Lucero earned significant critical acclaim, in particular for their 2005 album Nobody’s Darlings. The album’s lead single “The War” told the story of Nichols’ grandfather’s experiences serving in the Army during the Second World War. In 2009 Nichols released his debut solo album The Last Pale Light in the West, which enjoyed success when its songs saw use on the hit series The Walking Dead.
