His father, a professional musician known as Chronicle, encouraged McNaughton to write songs. McNaughton wrote his first song, “Rice Grain,” at only five years old.
At eleven McNaughton recorded a gospel song with Danny Browne, going on to provide backing vocals for Lutan Fyah and writing songs for the groups Popcaan and Konshens. In the early 2010s, McNaughton’s songs began to receive widespread radio play throughout Jamaica, in particular with his hits “Here Comes Trouble” and “Smile Jamaica.” He began touring widely in the UK and gave celebrated performances at Jamaica’s Reggae Sumfest.
In 2014 McNaughton released his debut EP Dread & Terrible, which was a number one hit on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart. Dread & Terrible would spend nearly a full year in the top ten on the chart, and earned McNaughton the Linkage Awards for Entertainer of the Year, Best New Artist and Culture Artist of the Year.
