His music is inspired and informed by bluegrass, blues and old-time Americana music. His specialties are the traditional melodies of the Southeastern Woodland indigenous peoples and African Americans.
Blount was raised with a mother who had roots in Sweden and Jersey and his father was black. He started playing guitar at the age of 12, at first playing in a rock band until hearing the eclectic acoustic duo Megan Jean and the KFB. After that, Blount finished his high school year diving into acoustic music. He attended Hamilton College, where he studied early African-American music and old-time music. He also took banjo lessons from Lydia Hamessley. He received his B.A. in ethnomusicology in 2017.

Along with fiddle player Tatiana Hargreaves, he released the EP Regulations in 2017.
The Moose Whisperers released their self-titled debut album in 2018, touring Sweden in support of the album. Blount formed a duo with fiddle player Libby Weitnauer while on a tour of Australia in 2018. The duo’s first album, Pretty Little Mister, was released in 2019. In 2020, Blount’s first solo album, Spider Tales, was released and debuted at #2 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart. Blount received the Steve Martin banjo prize in 2020. He was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition.
