In 1979 the Sugarhill Gang released their hit single “Rapper’s Delight,” which was the first-ever rap song to reach the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite the breakthrough moment in music history, the Sugarhill Gang struggled to produce another charting hit in the US. They did, however, enjoy several charting hits in Europe and abroad, in particular through “8th Wonder,” “Showdown” and “Apache.”
Though the group disbanded in 1985, they reunited in 1999 and continue to tour widely today. They have since performed at prominent events like Hong Kong’s Clockenflap Festival, Cardiff’s Depot in the Park Festival and Hylands Park’s V Festival.
