The Craven Country Jamboree was founded by Catholic priest Lucien Larre as a way to raise funds for his Bosco Homes charity initiative. The event became famous in the local community for its “Gopher Run” in which spectators rush to the front of the stage to set up their own front row seats.
By the mid-90s, the Jamboree had developed a raucous reputation for its booze-fueled fights and strip shows. The event calmed somewhat in the early 2000s following its being sold to the Queens City Kinsmen non-profit organization. The Craven Country Jamboree is now known as a traditional country music festival with a minimalist, back-to-basics format. In 2016 the festival was absorbed into the Country Thunder series.
